Jessica M. Thompson, an Australian-born director, is a determined woman who left her home country to establish her own production company in the United States. In 2017, she made The Light of the Moon, a drama about the effects of sexual assault on a woman’s personal life. This initial test, which was never published in France, was praised wildly elsewhere in the world, which piqued the interest of the majors.
The young woman is also using Sony/Screen Gems’ support to take the lead in her second feature. But it’s not there as we had anticipated. Contrary to the brilliant iterations of A24, it oddly gives up realism for a letdown gothic and horrifying fantasy that ignores the rules of independent cinema. Instead, the director creates an unsatisfying commercial movie that is made for teenagers but whose only point of coherence is its feminist agenda.
