Other choices undermine the magic of the movie, like minimising the roles of Figaro and Cleo and altering some crucial scenes to give Tom Hanks’ overacted Gepetto more time on screen. It was a thing that was going to happen. After all, a star like Tom Hanks was not going to join this project without imposing his terms, and undoubtedly easing it in this way was one of them. This, albeit in a rather perfunctory and anecdotal manner, at least serves to elaborate on the carpenter’s backstory and clarify points that were skimmed over in the original.
The script’s simplicity and ambiguity fixes some of the original nonsense while adding new passages that render her speech less radical and easier for the whole family to understand. Therefore, this live-action remake of “Pinocchio” is yet another unnecessary financial mistake that makes no improvements or additions. It will appeal to a certain audience because it entertains, which is obvious and perfectly understandable. However, I am unable to come up with any philosophical or cinematic reasons why it should be preferred to the animated version.
