The film, directed by Emma Holly Jones with a seductive mix of high-society wickedness and sexiness, is based on a novel by Suzanne Allain (who also wrote the screenplay), which was released in 2020 and was intended to be a fun riff on Jane Austen. It’s unclear, however, how big-screen adaptations can work in the “Masterpiece Theater” genre. “Mister. Malcolm’s List” is Jane Austen Lite, but the 2005 film adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” might be called “Pride and Prejudice” Lite.
These films, almost by necessity (i.e., a two-hour runtime), tend to strip novels of their elegant bones, and “Mr. Malcolm’s List,” in its classic imitation form, is just as deceptive and amusing entertainment as “Love & Whit Stillman’s Friendship” or the recent version of “Emma.” It’s a pleasantly clever dessert, which many of these films are, albeit without Tony’s literary pedigree.
It’s also a period love story in which three of the four main characters are played by actors of colour, which is a refreshing change. Of course, this is not unprecedented. “Wuthering Heights,” starring James Howson as Heathcliff, and “Bridgerton,” both released in 2011, were game changers in the historical romantic drama casting. But “Mr. Malcolm’s List” still feels like he’s pushing through a newly opened door, and he does so with a kind of zeal that hints at a future period drama with a much more daring spirit.
